Beginning in 1881, each county in Alabama was required to have a county health officer and after 1919, a local registrar of vital statistics who was responsible for recording all births in the county. These records were filed with the probate judge after 1907 when the booklet was filled (see Ala. Acts, 7, p. 893 [1907]); Ala. Acts, 1 sub. 1, p. 782 [1915]). This series consists of booklets that provide name of child, place of birth, registration district, sex, race, date of birth, name of attending physician or midwife, and information about the parents. This record began in 1907 and was discontinued ca. 1940.
